Tonight is the night...GO ACES!

Tonight is going to be a huge night for the city of Reno with the home opener for the Aces. With so much excitement and anticipation in the air, there is ONE thing that is going to be a bit of a pain and that's parking...UGGHH!! Here's a lowdown of what's going on... thx rgj!

Decades-long tradition of offering free parking in downtown Reno casino garages will end at the Club Cal Neva and Harrah’s with Friday evening’s opening game of the Reno Aces. Both garages will be charging $10 to park.
The parking fee will be charged for all 72 home game days this year for the Reno Aces, which costs $7 for a general admission ticket. No parking is available at the stadiumOther parking garages are offering special deals to fill up their spaces. At the Fitzgeralds parking garage, the rate will drop from $7.50 to $5 for 10 hours of parking as of Friday, said Hossein Minaie, a parking garage official. The garage, north of the railroad tracks from Harrah’s, has about 750 spaces available for public parking.“We are ready for the crowds,” Minaie said.Even closer, Basin Street Properties is offering a new special events parking rate of $5 for six hours of parking at its building, known as the Truckee River Tower. It’s on the south side of Second Street, across from the new stadium at Second. For disabled or elderly people, it would be the closest place to park and has about 750 spaces.“That’s great,” Mayor Bob Cashell said, of the new baseball rate. “Those guys are super to work with and great community partners.”Harrah’s and the Club Cal Neva are the two closest casinos with parking garages and officials say sell-out crowds could take over parking used by their regular customers. But they also have offers to get baseball fans inside. At Harrah’s, parking ticket stubs can be used for a $10 discount on $50 worth of food or items at its gift shop, said John Packer, marketing director for Harrah’s Reno and Tahoe. The garage has 480 parking spaces for non-valet customers. At the Club Cal Neva, drivers can put their parking tickets into a slot machine and get $10 worth of free play, said Clint Johnson, slot and marketing operations director. At both casinos, the offers are good for that day only. Those with club memberships, hotel guests or VIPs will be allowed to park free. At Harrah’s, those favored customers are asked to use valet parking for free on game days.Given the economy, Cashell said he expected some casinos would start charging. Cashell, a long-time casino owner, chuckled at the clever Cal Neva promotion. “Just getting people in the door, that’s the name of the game,” he said. Those looking for free parking will have to walk a little farther to parking garages operated by Circus-Circus and Silver Legacy, which together have about 3,000 spaces. Parking at the large Washoe County lot, south of the District Court house on Virginia Street, is free on weekends and evenings. In all, downtown has 15,704 parking spaces on the streets, in parking lots and garages, according to a city parking study completed in late 2006. Parking rates for street parking is not enforced after 6 p.m. or Sundays or holidays.Police are bracing for about 4,000 extra vehicles downtown for the opening game and the games this weekend. Six officers, a sergeant and two community service officers have been hired on overtime by the stadium to work the streets, directing traffic and pedestrians. For Friday’s opening night, the stadium has sold out, selling 9,100 tickets.
